Crime Data

Crime data is gathered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by participating law enforcement agencies. Until 2018, the FBI collected data known as the "Uniform Crime Report," or UCR, which included generalized crime data categories including: Violent Crime, Murder/Manslaughter, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Property Crime, Burglary, Larceny/Theft, Motor Vehicle Theft and Arson. Starting with the 2019 collection year, the FBI transitioned to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), which expanded the collection data consisting of three main categories: Crimes Against Persons, Crimes Against Property and Crimes Against Society. Those categories are further broken down into 60 individual categories in order to provide a more accurate picture of crime data.

The data is broken into three tables: Jurisdictions surrounding Freetown, Freetown-area with a population under 20,000 and the South Coast area.
